Week 31: कर्मधारय and द्वन्द्व Compounds
This week is designed as a 60-minute self-study lesson. Read aloud first, then translate.
Aim of the Week
Break and translate Karmadhāraya and dvandva compounds using a practical method: divide, identify relation, translate literally, then smooth.
Core Pattern
A compound compresses two or more ideas into one word. Do not guess from the whole word too quickly; split it.
Translation Practice
- नीलकमलम् अस्ति।
nīlakamalam asti. - महर्षिः वदति।
maharṣiḥ vadati. - मातापितरौ आगच्छतः।
mātāpitarau āgacchataḥ. - रामलक्ष्मणौ गच्छतः।
rāmalakṣmaṇau gacchataḥ.
Answer key
- There is a blue lotus.
- The great seer speaks.
- Mother and father come.
- Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa go.
Recitation Guidance
Recite compounds as one word, but translate them as a relationship between words.
Vocabulary
| Devanāgarī | IAST | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| नीलकमलम् | nīlakamalam | blue lotus |
| महर्षिः | maharṣiḥ | great seer |
| मातापितरौ | mātāpitarau | mother and father |
| रामलक्ष्मणौ | rāmalakṣmaṇau | Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa |
| आगच्छतः | āgacchataḥ | the two come |
Self-Check
- Can you split the compound?
- Can you say whether it means “of,” “descriptive,” “and,” or “one who has”?
