Week 31: कर्मधारय and द्वन्द्व Compounds

This week is designed as a 60-minute self-study lesson. Read aloud first, then translate.

Aim of the Week

Break and translate Karmadhāraya and dvandva compounds using a practical method: divide, identify relation, translate literally, then smooth.

Core Pattern

A compound compresses two or more ideas into one word. Do not guess from the whole word too quickly; split it.

Translation Practice

  1. नीलकमलम् अस्ति।
    nīlakamalam asti.
  2. महर्षिः वदति।
    maharṣiḥ vadati.
  3. मातापितरौ आगच्छतः।
    mātāpitarau āgacchataḥ.
  4. रामलक्ष्मणौ गच्छतः।
    rāmalakṣmaṇau gacchataḥ.
Answer key
  1. There is a blue lotus.
  2. The great seer speaks.
  3. Mother and father come.
  4. Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa go.

Recitation Guidance

Recite compounds as one word, but translate them as a relationship between words.
