Week 1: How to Learn Sanskrit Without Fear
This week is designed as a 60-minute self-study lesson. Read aloud first, then translate.
Aim of the Week
Learn the study method of this guide: read first, notice patterns, translate slowly, and return to the same Sanskrit more than once.
Core Pattern
The simplest Sanskrit sentence can be built with a noun and अस्ति asti, “is” or “exists.”
| Sanskrit | IAST | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| धर्मः | dharmaḥ | dharma; teaching; order |
| आत्मा | ātmā | self |
| ज्ञानम् | jñānam | knowledge |
| कर्म | karma | action |
| योगः | yogaḥ | discipline; yoga |
Translation Practice
- धर्मः अस्ति।
dharmaḥ asti. - ज्ञानम् अस्ति।
jñānam asti. - कर्म अस्ति।
karma asti. - योगः अस्ति।
yogaḥ asti.
Answer key
- There is dharma. / Dharma exists.
- There is knowledge.
- There is action.
- There is yoga / discipline.
Recitation Guidance
Read each sentence slowly. Keep long vowels long: ā should take roughly twice the time of a. Pronounce final ः softly after the vowel.
Vocabulary
| Devanāgarī | IAST | Meaning |

Self-Check
- Can you recognise अस्ति as “is/exists”?
- Can you read each word aloud without rushing?
Optional Note
At this stage, do not worry about full declension tables. Your first task is to associate visible word endings with meaning.
